Fictional Realities
For the last several years, I have been utilizing my background as a sculptor and painter to push the photographic realm and explore the modern environment. I want to capture the enigmatic architectural drama of place by using multiple time-lapse photographs, expansive panoramic views and careful alterations of the images. My goal is to engage the viewer and convey an animated experience of the dynamic urban infrastructure.
The ubiquitous and the mundane detritus of civic life are as much of the reality as the overall architectural grander. A single image represents a momentary perceptual glance. I use multiple images to convey a full sensational view and capture the human activity of seeing, experiencing and feeling.
These pieces are as much about what traditional photography is not, exploring movement, time, multiple viewpoints and the subjectivity of experience. During the re-assemblage into coherent panoramic vistas the scenes are altered and evolve away from the original source to become a metaphor for the memory.
I wish to continue to explore the camera as an extension of my sensory organs to photograph contemporary landscapes. Getting up close and personal with the civic details of architectural structures begins to question what is noticed and how we consume visual data. How do we consider the overlooked as well as the profound to develop memories? The pieces represent an idealization of this viewing process.
